How to Apply
IMPORTANT!! Effective April 13, 2012, the Department of State will adjust visa processing fees. Please go to: http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2012/03/187114.htm for more information.
Please follow all instructions from steps 1-8 regarding How to Apply for a non-immigrant visa.
Prior to your arrival at the consulate for your in-person interview, you must book an appointment on-line. Some appointment slots are reserved for certain visa categories. This allows us to accomodate priority and/or time sensitive appointments efficiently. Please do not book an appointment reserved for "Waivers for Criminal or other Ineligibilities". This appointment slot is reserved for applicants with criminal ineligibilities or other ineligibilities requiring special permission to travel to or via the United States. If you book your appointment incorrectly, you will not be allowed entry into the consulate, and any impending travel you may have scheduled may be jeopardized. Also, bring all original documents; they will be returned to you the same day.
Parents: if you are applying on behalf of your minor child (under 18) and both parents are listed on the child's birth certificate, both parents must appear in person with their valid U.S. visas, proof of residency status and proof of employment to the interview. If one parent is not in Bermuda, we need a notarized letter (original) giving consent to the parent applying for the child.
If you are not a legal resident in Bermuda, please follow this link for Out-of District Applications which require approval from the consulate Visa Section prior to arrival in Bermuda. IMPORTANT! The consulate will not be accepting applications for out of district applicants until further notice. We are sorry for any inconvenience.
You must have the following items/documents in hand when applying for your non-immigrant visa in person at the consulate:
1. A valid passport:
A valid passport with at least six months remaining until the expiration date and one clear page to put the visa onto.
2. Proof of Permission to reside in Bermuda:
This may be proof of Bermuda status, working resident status, a spousal permit, or a work permit. Those individuals on work permits must also provide a recent employment letter verifying length of employment and salary. Landing permits are no longer accepted.
3. Proof of employment, salary, pension, and/or financial solvency. Examples include job letter, pay stub, bank statement etc.
4. Bring the application fee:
Fees are payable at the time of the interview at the U.S. Consulate in Bermuda. This fee is non-refundable and payable in either U.S. or Bermuda dollars or a combination of both; no checks or credit cards please. There may be an additional fee (called a reciprocity fee) for certain nationalities and/or types of visas. If the visa is issued, this reciprocity fee can be paid by cash or credit card.

7. a) Complete on-line the DS-160- Non-Immigrant Visa Application form and bring the confirmation page to the interview:
You will need a printed copy of the DS-160 confirmation page with your uploaded digital photo intact when you appear at the consulate for your interview. This on-line form replaces the DS-156, DS-157 and DS-158 forms and is a mandatory step for NIV applications in Bermuda. Please allow yourself plenty of time to complete this lengthy form and save your work frequently to your computer to ensure no loss of data. Please input your name on the DS-160 exactly as it appears on your passport and if you are submitting your electronic application in Bermuda select "HAMILTON" for the country where you will be applying. This form needs to be completed at least 3 days prior to your appointment date. Also, please ensure that you enter the correct visa type when completing the form on-line. If you are having difficulty completing this form, certain travel agents can assist you for a fee.
b) One (1) digital U.S. passport-sized photo less than 6 months old uploaded to the DS-160 form.
The consulate requires that your photo be fully displayed on the confirmation sheet. The U.S. Consulate in Bermuda will not accept hard copies as stated in the DS-160. Photo studios and travel agents have been informed of the new procedures and requirements. Please visit Photo Requirements for further information about uploading photos.
8. Book an appointment online.
Once you have completed steps 1-7 (where applicable) you must now book an appointment online. Again, some appointment slots are reserved for certain visa categories. This allows us to accomodate priority and/or time sensitive appointments efficiently. You will be denied entry into the consulate if you are not booked in the correct appointment time slot. Also, NIV applicants should plan to spend approximately 2-3 hours at the consulate for NIV processing. Again, you will need to bring your DS-160 confirmation page with your digital photo intact at the time of your interview.
9. Pick up information.
If approved, you will be instructed with your particular pick-up day and time at the end of your interview. Pick-ups will either be on a Tuesday or Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. If your pick-up day falls on a holiday you may collect on the next business day.
