For the first time in Bermuda, the U.S. Consulate will air a radio program as part of its community outreach. The program – “Ask the Consulate” – is designed to inform the public and answer questions about consular and other issues.
The brainchild of U.S. Consul Margaret Pride and KJAZ Program Director Marshall Griffin, “Ask the Consulate” will air on the third Saturday of every month, debuting on Saturday, April 21st at 10:00 a.m. on 98.1 FM. “KJAZ has offered a valuable public service by hosting this program. We’re very excited about the opportunity – with their help – to reach out to the community,” said Consul General Gregory Slayton.
The thirty-minute program will invite listeners to learn more about “passports, visas and all that jazz.” The Consulate views the program as another way to educate and engage clients, a top goal of Undersecretary of State, Ms. Karen Hughes, and U.S. Consul General to Bermuda, Mr. Gregory Slayton.
Since the arrival of Consul General Slayton in Bermuda, the American Consulate has blazed new paths in the public information sphere. For example, Mr. Slayton forged a public/private partnership with Dunkley’s Dairy to showcase Consulate messages about passports, visas and the stop list on milk cartons. In another outreach effort, Consular and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers continue to tour area high schools and middle schools to encourage young people to avoid criminal activity that would put them on the stop list, or risk exclusion from United States.
“Ask the Consulate” will be an enhancement of existing Consulate services. Not only will the show be live, it will also provide listeners with the opportunity to ask questions and discuss issues. It will provide information on existing and new regulations and serve as an adjunct to post’s website, http://hamilton.usconsulate.gov.
