Hurricane Bill

Warden Message

August 18, 2009

The U.S. Consulate general in Hamilton is issuing this Warden Message to alert U.S. citizens residing and traveling in Bermuda that the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and the Bermuda Weather Service have issued alerts for a hurricane/tropical storm system, Hurricane BILL, that is currently located approximately 1400 miles SE of Bermuda and moving to the Northwest.

The National Hurricane Center reports Bill is moving West-Northwest at approximately 16 MPH/26 KPH. This motion is expected to continue for 24 hours, followed by a turn towards the Northwest on Wednesday.  The storm is currently predicted to pass by Bermuda early Saturday Morning.  For further information, see the NHC website.

The U.S. Consulate General will continue to monitor Hurricane Bill’s track, and will issue updated messages. U.S. citizens are urged to locate shelter, monitor media reports, and follow all official instructions. U.S. citizens should carry their travel documents at all time (i.e. U.S. Passport, Birth Certificate, picture ID’s, etc.) or secure them in safe, waterproof locations. We also suggest that American citizens contact friends and family in the United States with updates about their whereabouts.

Additional information on hurricanes and storm preparedness may be found in the “Hurricane Season-Know Before You Go” pamphlet and on the “Natural Disasters” page of the Bureau of Consular Affairs’ website.  Updated information on travel in Bermuda may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 within the United States and Canada, or from overseas, 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 am to 8:00 p.m., Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

Please continue to monitor the Consulate General’s website for updated information.  For further information please consult the Country Specific Information Sheet for Bermuda.  American Citizens in Bermuda should also monitor the website for Bermuda Government’s Emergency Measures Organization.  This site operates in conjunction with the Government’s emergency radio station 100.1 FM and represents one of the two locations for Official Information disseminated to the public by the Government of Bermuda.
