An energetic relationship

Like good neighbours, Bermuda and the United States are there for each other. Although there have been periods when that relationship simmered on a back burner, today it is characterised by an energy and focus that are the hallmark of good public diplomacy in action. That is a tribute to both countries.

Our relationship is founded on a 400-year history of shared values and deep cultural connections and on the economics of geographical proximity. Most of Bermuda's imports derive from the United States, as do the majority of the island's tourists. Similarly, the United States relies on Bermuda for its firm position in the global reinsurance marketplace. The Americans have been there for us; we have been there for them.

However, as the years come and go, so do political leaders. In order to preserve the importance of this relationship through successive administrations diplomacy is critical. During my time in office, and indeed during the time of Consul General Gregory Slayton, bilateral talks with senior US officials in the Legislative and Executive branches has been a priority. It is no doubt one of the reasons Bermuda has seen robust performances from the international business and tourism sectors in recent history.

Because of the inter-dependence of our countries, it is vital that we communicate clearly with each other. It's always been my mantra that you should talk to your friends before you need them. I think the activities of this week further highlight the level at which Bermuda's elected leaders are committed to that mantra in an effort to protect the interests of Bermudians both at home and abroad.

Our country has a partner in this objective and his name is Gregory Slayton. Bermudians are indebted to him for his untiring work. He has enhanced the level of access in Washington afforded to the Bermuda Government, and by doing so, he has helped strengthen an already strong partnership now in its fourth century.

By Dr. Ewart Brown, Premier of Bermuda
