Habitat for Humanity: We need your support

HABITAT for Humanity is hoping residents will turn out in droves — and in a generous spirit — to a free concert showcasing Harvard’s glee clubs on Tuesday.At the request of the American Consulate, the Harvard Krokodiloes, the Din and Tonics and the Radcliffe Pitches will perform at the Anglican Cathedral between noon and 1.30 p.m.

Admission is free, but the Consulate is hoping residents will donate to Habitat Bermuda, which this year plans to travel to Brazil and India to help build homes for underprivileged people there.

The trip is an annual one made by the glee clubs and Hasty Pudding Theatricals. As usual, the groups will perform in venues across the island. The concert at the Cathedral is their first fundraiser on island.

“This year’s Bermuda tour has a little something extra,” said US Consul General Gregory Slayton.

“This year, in participation with the American Consulate, the Harvard glee clubs will sing in aid of Habitat for Humanity Bermuda — an opportunity for which they are grateful. And an opportunity not to be missed.”

He said the students were particularly excited about the free performance for “three good reasons”.

Foremost, said Mr. Slayton, was the fact that they would be helping to raise money for Habitat for Humanity, “one of Bermuda’s excellent non-profits”.

Secondly, they were hopeful that their musical talents would further strengthen Bermuda’s ties with the United States.

Thirdly, the glee clubs hoped that Bermuda students would attend the event, allowing them to chat “about the importance of hard work and dedication in high school — and how that will help them prepare for a successful life no matter what they choose to do after they graduate”.

He added: “There is no doubt that Bermuda is fortunate in having a thriving not-for-profit culture that is sometimes called the third pillar of the island’s economy. The people of Bermuda — whether Bermudian or expatriate, Government or private sector — are incredibly generous in giving their time, energy and financial resources to help others.

“The Harvard Krokodiloes, Radcliffe Pitches and the Din and Tonics are happy to be part of this charitable tradition, giving back to Bermuda in the way they do best — with song.

“As a Harvard alumnus, it is a great pleasure for me personally to welcome the Harvard glee clubs while they tour Bermuda.”
