CG Slayton gives Stop List talk to Sandy's Middle School students

US Consul General Encourages Students at
Sandys Secondary Middle School to Stay Off the Stop List

Consul General Gregory Slayton made an in-person stop at a local school today, hammering home his message to young Bermudians to “Stay Off the Stop List.”  He was the guest of Dr. Timothy Jackson, new head of Sandys Secondary Middle School, where he spoke at the Monday morning assembly.

In a bid to attract the attention of middle-schoolers, Mr. Slayton’s presentation showcased the latest youth-oriented tool in the Consulate’s marketing strategy – stickers.  The stickers bear the slogan “Be cool. Don’t be a fool. Follow the rules. Stay off the stop list,” designed by fourteen-year old William Broughton of Somersfield Academy.

“It is really important to get the message across to the young people of Bermuda that it is in their best interests to stay away from crime.  Bad behavior can mean being put on the so-called ‘stop list,’ which could mean a life-long ban on traveling to the United States,” said the Consul General.  “That is definitely not cool.”

Principal Jackson stated, “Not only have we posted signs throughout the building, we have also discussed in assembly the consequences of criminal behavior. The Consul General’s personal appearance this morning made a big impact on the students, allowing them to put a face and a voice behind the stop list campaign.”

The stop list campaign is an example of the Consulate’s ongoing commitment to effective partnership.
