US Consul General Keynotes the International
CrimeStoppers Conference and Highlights the Rule of Law
A keynote speaker at the recent 2007 International CrimeStoppers Conference, Consul General Gregory Slayton spoke of the importance of community involvement in the prevention of crime. “Community partnership is the foundation of a healthy society,” said Mr. Slayton. “A successful CrimeStoppers Program relies not only on police intervention but also on the media and the civilian community.”
Consul General Slayton applauded those who have contributed to the success of CrimeStoppers. Formed in 1996, Bermuda’s CrimeStoppers Program has already made its mark. Four thousand tips about criminal behavior have been logged, with almost 200 arrests made as a direct result of the program. Over $21 million in illegal drugs has been confiscated, and over $1.5 million in stolen property has been recovered.
“While these statistics are indeed impressive, there’s always room for improvement,” said Mr. Slayton. “The key is to educate the public about the important role they play in keeping our communities safe. This is where the media can do its part, by driving home the CrimeStoppers message again and again.”
The confidential hotline that members of the public can used to report knowledge of a crime is 1-800-623-TIPS. Callers remain anonymous.
