U.S. Consul General Supports Diabetes Awareness

In a gesture of support, Consul General Gregory Slayton will participate in the Bermuda Diabetes Association’s awareness campaign this month.  He will meet other supporters at 7:00 a.m. on November 14th to “Walk the Circle” at the Botanical Gardens to draw attention to the gravity of the disease.

The fight against diabetes is a personal one for Mr. Slayton – his grandfather died from the disease.  As a result, he takes proper diet and exercise seriously for both his family and himself.  “Good health cannot be taken for granted,” he said. “Preventing diabetes has to be a health priority. We all need to know what we can do to stay healthy.  I urge everyone to follow the good advice of the Diabetes Association – eat properly and exercise. And show your support by participating in some of the activities organized to mark Diabetes Awareness Month.”

The awareness campaign kicks-off with the Soup Shack at the World Class Rugby, where healthy food alternatives will be available.  Then, on November 14th, World Diabetes Day, participants are invited to cycle to work, attend an evening lecture, or – like Mr. Slayton – “Walk the Circle.”

The hope is that the publicity surrounding World Diabetes Day will make individuals stop for a moment and assess the likelihood that they and their families are at risk from the disease.  Said Mr. Slayton, “Let’s stop the disease in its tracks. Let us act now to keep our loved ones safe.”

Over 9,000 Bermuda residents have been diagnosed with Diabetes and that number is growing.
